DEFENSIVE DRIVING TRAINING FOR GENERAL ROAD USERS
DEFENSIVE DRIVING TRAINING FOR GENERAL ROAD USERS
SINGLE DAY COURSE : 8AM - 3PM
"Driving has never been a right, it is a privilege that should be used responsibly"
How many times have we sat stiff in our seats, bracing for what feels like an inevitable impact as reckless drivers squeeze into impossible gaps? These tense moments can ruin an otherwise peaceful drive, leaving us seething with frustration and saying things we normally wouldn’t. This all contributes to the overall danger on the roads.
As the months pass, the tragic consequences of this road madness are becoming painfully clear. We have all experienced the sorrow of lost lives within our communities, with each accident serving as a grim reminder of the urgent need for change.
A significant concern is the safety of new drivers and teenagers, who are being thrust into this chaotic environment with limited skills and little experience to navigate the dangers.
At Drive Sense, we are committed to being part of that change. Commit yourself and your drivers to a defensive driving course, and feel the difference it makes to your safety and sanity on the road.
Our approach integrates the most up-to-date, globally recognised solutions in safer driver performance and crash avoidance. The course offers Zimbabwe-specific techniques tailored to diverse environments, infrastructure, road conditions, traffic patterns, driving habits, and accident prevention strategies.
Whether you are an individual looking to improve your safety and protect your loved ones, or you work in sectors like mining, farming, manufacturing, construction, or hospitality, this course will help you save lives and avoid the financial burden of preventable road accidents.
(For drivers of large commercial vehicles, please refer to our Commercial Fleet Safety Upgrade page).
PLEASE NOTE
This defensive driving course provides certification in advanced defensive driving (non-practical) but does NOT supply the government licensing legally required for public transport drivers and commercial heavy vehicle drivers. If you need a defensive driving card for legal purposes, it is important that you apply for your course through the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
WITH THAT BEING SAID...
Our Drive Sense advanced defensive driving programme guarantees to minimise risks and help prevent road crashes, thereby reducing injuries and fatalities, while also helping to avoid costly vehicle repairs and damages.
This course is an invaluable addition to the skill set of drivers in Zimbabwe. We ensure all participants thoroughly understand the course content and are equipped with the deeper fundamentals required to survive driving.
ENHANCE YOUR SKILLS: INSIGHTS FROM OUR DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE
Participants will learn the crucial skill of risk awareness, which is essential for navigating both city streets and rural roads. The training equips drivers with the ability to anticipate and respond to various road conditions, traffic scenarios, and unexpected events.
Participants will also learn how to maintain focus and make informed decisions, crucial in Zimbabwe’s fast-paced driving environment, where traffic density and rule violations are common.
Participants will learn the importance of space management, which involves maintaining adequate distances between vehicles and creating buffer zones for reaction time, helping drivers avoid risks such as rear-end collisions, side-swipes, and other accidents that can occur from insufficient spacing.
Participants will also explore strategies for safely navigating intersections, changing lanes, and manoeuvring through tight spaces. By understanding space management, drivers can enhance their own safety while contributing to smoother traffic flow.
In our defensive driving course, participants will explore the severe consequences of speeding, which, while often perceived as a time-saver, can lead to devastating outcomes, including death or serious injury. The training highlights how exceeding posted speed limits increases the risk of crashes due to reduced reaction times and longer stopping distances.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of the physics involved in speeding and the potential for catastrophic results when things go wrong. The course also emphasises the responsibility that comes with driving and the impact that speeding can have on the lives of others, reinforcing the importance of making safe driving choices.
Participants will learn essential techniques to navigate various road types with confidence. The training covers critical practices such as effectively checking blind spots, understanding vehicle maintenance, and proper mirror positioning, all of which are vital for safe driving.
Participants will also receive guidance on assessing the age and condition of vehicle tyres to prevent dangers like blowouts or aquaplaning. The course emphasises the importance of effective communication with other road users, including the timely use of turn signals.
Safe driving involves a comprehensive set of techniques, and we encourage questions and discussions to deepen understanding and promote safer driving habits.
A crucial aspect of driver safety is learning how to control a vehicle in adverse conditions or emergency situations. Our defensive driving course places significant emphasis on this topic, ensuring it is not overlooked. To facilitate effective learning, we have designed our classroom-based presentation to be highly visual, encouraging deep discussions and providing workbooks for participants to take home as a valuable reference.
During the course, drivers will learn essential techniques to maintain control during skids, execute emergency braking, manage tyre blowouts, and perform evasive manoeuvres. A solid understanding of vehicle dynamics, including weight distribution, tyre traction, and steering response, enhances their ability to react swiftly and decisively in critical moments.
Participants will learn about the various distractions that can impair their ability to respond to changing traffic conditions. This includes understanding how activities such as texting, phone use, eating, and adjusting entertainment systems divert attention from driving.
The training highlights the critical importance of maintaining focus while driving and explores the serious consequences of distracted behaviour. Participants will also discover practical strategies to minimise distractions.
Participants will explore the critical role of fatigue management in ensuring safe driving. They will learn to recognise the signs of tiredness and understand how fatigue affects alertness and reaction times.
The course provides practical techniques for combating fatigue, including effective rest strategies and when to take regular breaks during long drives.
Participants will gain crucial skills for handling adverse driving conditions, such as rain, fog, wind etc. The training focuses on understanding how different weather factors affect vehicle performance and driver behaviour.
Participants will learn techniques for adjusting speed, maintaining safe following distances, and using headlights and wipers effectively to enhance visibility. The course also covers strategies for managing traction loss such as aquaplaning.
We address the challenges drivers face when confronted with non-functional traffic lights and inadequate road markings. Participants will learn essential techniques for safely navigating these situations, including how to treat non-functional lights and the importance of situational awareness.
We emphasise the need for clear communication with other road users in these circumstances, such as using eye contact to signal intentions. The training also covers strategies for assessing traffic flow and making informed decisions at intersections. By equipping drivers with the skills to handle these common yet potentially hazardous scenarios, we enhance their confidence, ensuring they can adapt effectively when infrastructure fails.
Impaired or drunk driving is a significant issue in Zimbabwe, with statistics showing a concerning prevalence. Shockingly, 50% of accidents on Zimbabwean roads are attributed to drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Our course delves deeply into this topic, where participants will be shown the devastating consequences of drunk driving, and be able to engage in group discussions. Participants leave the course with a heightened awareness of the dangers and responsibilities associated with impaired driving.
Psychological factors such as stress, emotions, and cognitive biases significantly influence driver performance and decision-making. Our course addresses the importance of managing emotions like anger and stress, which can lead to a multitude of dangerous situations, impaired judgement and slow reaction times.
Participants will gain insights into how psychological states can alter their ability to perceive their environment. Through interactive sessions and practical strategies, drivers will learn effective anger management techniques and cognitive strategies to enhance focus and decision-making behind the wheel.
