SPEEDING
Speeding Reckless Driving Often Leads to Deadly Wrecks... it is also the leading contributor to death and serious injuries on the road
We are living in the era of speed –always fast forward, under pressure and trying to achieve as much as possible in a limited amount of time. This is reflected in all aspects of our lives, including when driving. Speeding, even “only a bit over” the speed limit, has become a common practice for some, and this comes out in numerous studies. Should this be acceptable when it hurts so many people? The answer is no.
Speeding and Reckless Driving hurts people badly, some worse than others; but in the end, everybody suffers. So, whenever you or the driver next to you are going beyond the speed limit, just consider two key facts:
• Even a few extra kph over the speed limit can harm you and those around you.
• Speeding will not necessarily take you faster to your destination.
Unfortunately, road travel has a downside. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely trip or commuting to work, a car crash with a reckless driver can destroy your peace of mind and can sometimes lead to a tragedy. If a driver’s negligent actions cause a collision, you may accept it as a hazard to the road. It’s different when a fellow motorist behaves with wilful and wanton disregard for the damage they might cause.
When a driver doesn’t care about the consequences of their actions, the outcome is frequently catastrophic. A reckless driver’s extreme behaviours often include speeding, road rage, distracted driving, improper lane changes, and red-light running. A reckless driver’s road trip might also include alcohol or mind-altering drugs. Any one of these poor driving choices increases the potential for an accident. When a driver combines two or more of these behaviors they increase the potential even more.
Reckless driving is a much bigger problem than most people would think. It seems that there are more cases of rude, speeding and outrageous behaviour on the road now than in the past, the observation is correct—if for no other reason than more drivers are driving more km on the same roads than ever before. Unfortunately, many drivers engage in reckless driving despite knowing that these destructive behaviours considerably heighten their risk of causing a devasting accident.

You probably didn’t have it in your plans, and you might not be exactly thrilled to have to call a tow truck. But it does happen, and when it does, perhaps the first thing on your mind is how much it will cost.
The second thing is how much it would cost to tow your car. It is every car owner’s worst nightmare to have a vehicle break down in the middle of a road trip or city errand. It’s even worse when there’s nothing you can do about it – either because you’re too busy to address it yourself or if you just don’t know how to.

GIVE WAY TO AMBULANCES
In case of a medical emergency, every moment is critical in saving a patient’s life. The initial assessment and early commencement of the treatment to the patient in the very first hour is crucial in many emergencies and this window of time is often referred to as the ‘Golden Hour’.
Ambulances play a pivotal role in the golden hour, as the responsibility of the initial treatment and also transporting the patient to the hospital lies with them. With increasing traffic jams on the roads, we must be sensitive about giving way to the ambulance. The moment we hear the siren of the ambulance, the motorist should start moving aside and give way to it.
The top time-critical medical emergencies include heart attacks, blood pressure strokes and poly-trauma with ongoing bleeding and accident injuries
In case of a heart attack, a portion of the heart muscle stops receiving adequate blood supply due to blockage of the blood vessel and each passing minute increases the chances of irreversible death of that portion of the heart muscle or fatal arrhythmia (abnormal rhythm). Similarly, in a stroke, a portion of the brain loses its blood supply and irreversible cell death starts, which worsens as time passes leading to irreversible functional disability or even death. In the case of polytrauma patients severe blood loss is the commonest cause of death.
The immediate management of all these time-critical emergencies starts as soon as the patient is in the ambulance. Nowadays, state-of-the-art ambulances function as ‘Hospitals on Wheels’, as they have resuscitative equipment along with trained staff and modern communication technological aids to alert and keep the hospital emergency teams in readiness to take over as soon as the patient arrives at the Emergency Room. However, even the best–equipped ambulance needs to reach a specialised emergency centre at the earliest to have the best chance, to save a life.
We must sensitive people to the fact that every second counts in a medical emergency, which is why people need to give way when an ambulance approaches. It may mean the difference between life and death.
A set of tips for drivers has been assembled by Drive Zimbabwe Roadside Assistance to help keep them safe when making way for an emergency ambulance. The tips relate to locations and situations where confusion can occur, such as traffic lights, roundabouts, highways without hard shoulders and stretches of road with solid white lines where overtaking is not allowed. “Every driver wants to help and do the right thing, but the approach of a red beacon light vehicle can take them by surprise.
“We hope that our tips will minimise confusion and reduce risk.”
At traffic lights
If you are at a red traffic light and there is no clear path for the ambulance to pass, you must cautiously proceed through the red light and promptly pull over to the side of the road. Always exercise good judgment and prioritise safety, while ensuring that the ambulance has a clear path. This is NOT an opportunity to save time by running a red light. Only proceed through the red light to create space for the ambulance!
Roundabouts and junctions
If you’re approaching a roundabout or a junction and you hear an ambulance approaching, look at its position, as this will let you know where it wants you to go. You must take appropriate action to ensure its passage. At a roundabout, exit as soon as it is safe to do so and then pull over to allow the ambulance to pass. At a junction, if you can move forward safely, do so and then pull over to the side of the road.

IN A RUSH?
People in this day and age seem to always be in a rush to get somewhere, and have become accustomed to being wrapped up in their own lives. There is an obvious lack of care for those around them. Drivers must take a moment to show courtesy to another driver (or pedestrian for that matter). Delaying an arrival time by mere seconds is never worth the risk.
In today’s age, we need to retrain people's minds and have them display more acts of courtesy and kindness. What makes it worse is that they are doing it in front of their children so they grow to accept rude behaviour as a normal part of life when the opposite should be true.
Take speeding for example, even if you speed by just 5 km/h over a one-hour trip (based upon a 100 km/h speed limit area), you are only gaining a maximum of 3 minutes, break that down to a 30-minute trip where your saving 90 seconds... is it worth it when just a few kilometres over the speed limit could mean that a slippery part of the road or a sharp corner becomes dangerous to the point you are not only risking the lives of those in your vehicle but also the lives in the vehicles sharing the road with you.
These seconds you are so eager to save could be the price you put on your own life or the lives of others, are you or those you love only worth seconds or are they more precious? Seriously people, are the seconds in your life so important that you cannot spare a few to consider others around you?
Just because you use the road, doesn’t mean you own it. We all share the road, we all share the responsibility. Reaching the destination safely is the best reward for any motorist/pedestrian!
